About The Artist - Joann Leone

As a practicing psychiatrist I learned firsthand how the body, mind and spirit are restored and healed through self-expression, emotional connection and close contact with the natural world. I encouraged my patients in these practices to help them build emotional resilience while using them myself to cope with the myriad demands and intense emotions that arise over the course of a career conducting psychiatric treatment. Now that I am retired my personal development has taken a new turn with the creation of art as a channel for emotional insight, exploration of my personal aesthetic and the enjoyment of lifelong learning.

I realize now that my training as a clinical observer can be very useful in my artistic process, not only in discovering and exploring what moves me, but also in understanding how and why.

I work in pastel, a medium I enjoy for its chromatic intensity and immediacy, drawing inspiration from landscapes and the tableaux of still life. My goal is to capture a moment, mood or story not simply as a visual image, but as an evocative window to share my world of sensory impressions and emotions. I hope my viewers will enter and co-create the scene, bringing their interpretation to my images to form a shared experience of hope and joy.
